Artificial Intelligence is an intelligent entity created by humans and can make intelligent decisions or accurate predictions through algorithms within a specifically given and defined problem domain.
Three Phases in AI
Generally, AI is divided broadly into three phases: Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) – Narrow AI & Enhanced Narrow AI, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI).
Presently, we are in the age of Enhanced Narrow AI.
Narrow AI: Artificial intelligence that is programmed to perform a single task and demonstrates near-perfect single-task capabilities. E.g., facial recognition, speech recognition, search engines, machine-composed news reports, etc.
Enhanced Narrow AI: An AI demonstrates capabilities overall approaching humans and capable of more than one task, e.g., autonomous vehicles, conversational chatbots essentially unrecognizable from real humans, robots capable of mimicking the mobility of human.
General AI: An AI is proven to be able to fully mimic all human behaviours and intelligence to solve any problems, including planning, memory, analysis, and five and more senses.
Super Intelligence AI: An AI that is not only to mimic human behaviours and intelligence. Instead, it is proven to surpass human intelligence and capabilities and is capable of continuous self-improvement (self-sensing and self-reprogramming).
Applications of AI
AI technologies have evolved from simple, rules-based intelligence systems such as spelling and grammar check into the narrow machine-learning of predictive maintenance and robotic process automation (RPA).
AI applications are emerging in five cognitive systems, which are Natural language processing (NLP), Computer vision, Pattern recognition system, reasoning optimization technology, and robotics.
- Natural language processing (NLP) systems that recognize voice and text expressions;
- Computer vision, which identifies objects, scenes, and activities;
- Pattern recognition systems that find recurring themes in large quantities of data;
- Reasoning and optimization technology capable of complex inferences and efficient evaluation of various options; and
- Robotics, which integrates cognitive technologies to perform end-to-end physical and cognitive processes.
